ROSEMONT, Pa. — Lower Merion School District Superintendent Frank Ranelli is resigning from his position on April 30, 2027, he announced earlier today.

In his statement to LMSD parents, Dr. Ranelli did not elaborate on his reasons for leaving.

“I am sure people will question why; and simply, this position is just not a good match for me,” he said.

Dr. Ranelli is the fourth LMSD superintendent to leave since 2021. Longtime superintendent Robert Copeland retired in 2021; Dr. Khalid Mumin succeeded him before being nominated as the Pennsylvania secretary of education in 2023; then Dr. Steven Yanni took over before leaving in 2024 to become superintendent of Central Bucks School District.

“We are extremely grateful for his time, dedication and willingness to support LMSD through the upcoming leadership transition,” School Board President Dr. Kerry Sautner said in a separate statement.

The board has not announced a successor and will begin discussing the search and timeline at its October meeting. The district previously hired the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit to assist with the search. The district has not announced an interim superintendent, although current Assistant to the Superintendent Megan Shafer previously served in that role.

“The students in our schools are incredible! And all our staff, in all our departments, always put kids first,” Dr. Ranelli said.
